Listen to Sharon Gubbay Helfer recount her family's fascinating history, going back to the Jewish Baghdadi community in Calcutta, India, and to Alexandria, Egypt, and further back to Turkey and Georgia. Following a discussion of her parents' origins, Sharon goes on to describe their youth and marriage in London, and their immigration to Winnipeg and subsequently Montreal. Sharon also talks here about her father's career as a doctor, and her mother's incredible journey from theater and portrait photography to teaching CEGEP art history and publishing two books about Montreal history and photography. Sharon Gubbay Helfer is an oral historian and a scholar-practitioner of difficult dialogues, as well as a Research Associate with Concordia University's Centre for Oral History and Digital Studies (COHDS) and Concordia University's Institute for Canadian Jewish Studies.
